MBA without Management Experience. Don't do It!
From the Harvard School of Business to Unknown State University Online, there are numerous M.B.A. programs from which people can choose. Anybody with a functioning brain can acquire, and, in a few cases, earn an M.B.A. Just because anybody can get an MBA degree, does not mean that anybody who can should. I don't know how many times I have heard non-management employees say, "I plan to pursue my MBA." Such talk can only beg one question, "Why?" If a non-management employee does not have years (e.g., six or more) of management experience, then he/she should not enter an MBA program; he/she should invest the time and money toward something beneficial. A competitive MBA curriculum admits students who bring specific experience from their industries. This experience is vital, since it allows students to make meaningful contributions to class discussions, case studies and team projects. If an MBA student lacks that vital experience, then what does he/she offer to the program? He/she provides nothing to the MBA experience. He/she is occupying a seat that can be filled by a student who can make a meaningful contribution. When a manager enters an MBA program, he/she acquires skills which can be employed instantly to his/her specific line of work, which can add immediate value to his/her organization. After a rank-and-file employee earns an MBA, he/she cannot immediately apply learned skills, because he/she is not in a position to do so. If you are a rank-and-file employee, who is thinking of pursuing an MBA, don't do it. At the very least, get some management experience. |
